Vilma J\u00e4\u00e4<\/strong> is a musician, singer, composer, fiddler and researcher who works in the fields of folk music, pop music and opera.<\/p>

In October 2023, J\u00e4\u00e4 released her much-anticipated debut album, Kosto<\/em>, where centuries-old stories are woven into electronic music. In early 2024, Kosto <\/em>won the Ethno Album of the Year award at the Emma Gala and the Folk Music Album of the Year award at the El\u00e4k\u00f6\u00f6n FOLK! Gala and was nominated for the Teosto Award.<\/p>

Selected for music media YleX's Vilma J\u00e4\u00e4\u2019s<\/em> singles Saatanan saalistaja (Fucking Predator)<\/em> and Humalahullu (The Raving Drunk)<\/em> featured on the YleX playlist, while J\u00e4inen neiti (Icy Maiden)<\/em> was added to the Radio Suomi playlist. In 2022, a panel of music experts ranked Saatanan saalistaja (Fucking Predator)<\/em> among the top 100 global songs in a survey by Finland's leading newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The first single\u00a0Huutaa<\/em>\u00a0of her upcoming second album was featured on Levyraati\u2014the legendary TV show for new music\u2014in February 2025.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In addition to her solo music, J\u00e4\u00e4 is known internationally for her role as a folk singer in Kaija Saariaho\u2019s opera Innocence<\/em>. The role of Mark\u00e9ta was composed especially for J\u00e4\u00e4, and received international acclaim for her unique vocal techniques and powerful interpretation.<\/p>

J\u00e4\u00e4 is a versatile composer. Alongside her solo ethno-pop work, she has composed music deeply rooted in tradition for groups like SibA Folk Big Band and her vocal ensemble, J\u00e4ine. Her musical style reflects her folk music roots as well as her extensive background in a cappella and instrumental music. Her solo piano compositions have been described as cinematic and captivating.<\/p>

In 2021, Vilma J\u00e4\u00e4 graduated with a Master of Music from the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Her research focuses on Finnish and Karelian herding call traditions, and she is developing a graphic notation system to capture as much of this unique musical genre as possible. Her research has been supported by the Niilo Helander Foundation and the Finnish Arts Promotion Centre.\u00a0<\/p>

An enthusiast of crafts and upcycling, J\u00e4\u00e4 also designs and sews her performance outfits, drawing inspiration from traditional and folk costumes.
